Yesterday

by The Beatles

Yesterday
All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay
Oh, I believe
In yesterday

Suddenly
I’m not half the man I used to be
There’s a shadow hanging over me
Oh, yesterday
Came suddenly

Why she
Had to go I don’t know
She wouldn’t say
I said
Something wrong now I long
For yesterday

Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe
In yesterday

Why she
Had to go I don’t know
She wouldn’t say
I said
Something wrong now I long
For yesterday

Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe
In yesterday

(hum to “I believe in yesterday”)

VoiceBox Episode 26 Activities – Ballet and Dance

episode-26-activities-ballet.doc

EXERCISE 1 – Speaking
To get started this week, talk about dancing. If you’re in a classroom, try splitting the class into pairs and use the following questions to start discussion. If you’re doing these alone, just write down your answers in full sentences using the present tense.

Do you like to dance?
Where do you dance?
How often do you go dancing?
What kinds of music do you like to dance to?
Do you prefer to dance with your friends or alone?

EXERCISE 2 – Jumble
This week’s Street Karaoke song is ‘Yesterday’ by the Beatles. The lyrics are listed below, but they’re all in the wrong order. Try to follow along with the song and put the lyrics in their correct order.

Oh, I believe
Came suddenly
There’s a shadow hanging over me
Yesterday
I said

For yesterday
I’m not half the man I used to be
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay
Oh, yesterday
All my troubles seemed so far away

Something wrong now I long
Had to go I don’t know
She wouldn’t say
In yesterday
Now I need a place to hide away
Suddenly

Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Why she
Oh, I believe
In yesterday

EXERCISE 3 – Writing
An acrostic poem is a good way to help your vocabulary. Acrostic poems use the each letter of a chosen word as the first letter in another word. Each letter is on a new line.
It is good, but not essential, for the poem to relate to the word you are using.
Here is an example using the word “voice”:

Very
Often
Interesting
Cool hosts
Excellent fun

Now try your own, using the word DANCE

D
A
N
C
E

EXERCISE 4 – Spot the differences
Spot the differences in the two pictures below and write them out using full sentences. To make it more difficult, you can try this with a partner. Take one picture each and don’t look at the other person’s picture. Describe each of your pictures in detail and see if you can work out what’s different. This makes for great speaking practice.

VoiceBox Episode 25 - Roaring Hooves - Activities

Download and print: roaring-hooves-activities.doc

EXERCISE 1: Quiz
Read the following excerpt from a UB Post article on this year’s Roaring Hooves Festival and answer the questions below:

In search of its avowed goal of bringing man, music, and nature
together, between June 11 and 22 the festival took musicians based in a
number of countries from the capital city to Ovorkhangai and Dundgobi
aimags. This year’s visiting contingent included artists from Germany,
Switzerland, the United States and Taiwan. They were joined here by
Mongolian musicians. Three non-Mongolians who now live in Ulaanbaatar
were also there.

This festival was first organized in 1999 and has been held in Mongolia
every year since then. The German magazine Geo recently called it “one
of the world’s 50 best cultural tourism events”. Over the years, the
festival has brought more than 450 artists from 50 countries to
Mongolia to interact with musicians here, especially those who perform
traditional music forms.

Many workshops and shows were held during the course of the festival.
A.Tseden-Ish, head of the National Folk Song and Dance Ensemble, gave
an interesting lecture on long song and its tradition, demonstrating
the five major intonations involved in such singing: central khalkha,
borjigon, bayanbaraat, baruun and zuun.

A long song competition was held among around 70 singers. Ts.Enkhbayar,
a student of the Mongolian Cultural and University of Culture and Arts,
came first. He sang the Tumen ekh song. E.Baasanjav, of the same
university, was adjudged second singing Kherlengiin Bariya.
B.Choisuren, a herder from Erdenedalai soum, came third. He sang
Jaakhan Sharga.

These three then went to a cliff fifty meters away. To show that long
song has to be sung not just well but also with power they sang against
the wind but it was no problem for the curious and enthralled
listeners. The hills echoed with the sound of an ancient tradition and
culture that still lives much as it did hundreds of years ago.

The farewell concert was on June 23 at the State Philharmonic Hall in
Ulaanbaatar. Prof Bernhard Wulff, the festival president, and S.
Badamkhorol, its director on behalf of the New Music Association of
Mongolia, spoke on their experiences and promised to come back next
summer.

QUIZ
1. Approximately how many singers participated in the long song competition?
2. What is the goal of the Roaring Hooves Festival?
3. When was the first Roaring Hooves festival organised?
4. Why did the singers go to a cliff 50m away?
5. Where was the farewell concert held?

EXERCISE 2: Writing
Write a short news article about the last musical performance or concert you have seen. It could be a school performance, a free concert, a band at a café, whatever. What instruments did they play? What was the style of the music? What was the situation?

EXERCISE 3: Vocabulary
Identify the landscape features in the image below.
Eg. Mountains, steppe, forest, river, etc.

Episode 24 - Naadam/Celebrations

IMG_2370.jpg IMG_2302.jpg

Because it is now so close to Naadam, this week’s episode of VoiceBox is all about Naadam and other festivals and celebrations. Dave and Bolor spoke to our good friend Ganz, who every year takes tourists to experience Naadam. Even though I’m sure you all know about Naadam, there’s still a lot you can learn from this week’s show, so check out the script below:voicebox-episode-24-naadam.doc

For even more learning goodness, check out this week’s Exercises and Activities, which are online now. Sorry for the delay, but it’s been a very busy week. We were filming some special things for VoiceBox up in Darkhan, and I’ve been updating different areas of the site and fixing problems.

There is also a new Quiz as part of this week’s exercises, about some different celebrations. If you have trouble getting the right answers, try looking them up online while you’re here. The internet is a great research tool, with sites like Wikipedia.org and Dictionary.com.

This week’s Street Karaoke song is ‘Walking Away’ by Craig David and you can read the lyrics of that song here:

Walking Away

By CRAIG DAVID

I’m walking away from the troubles in my life
I’m walking away oh to find a better day
I’m walking away from the troubles in my life
I’m walking away oh to find a better day
I’m walking away

sometimes some people get me wrong
when it’s something I’ve said or done
sometimes you feel there is no fun
that’s why you turn and run
but now I truly realise
some people don’t wanna compromise
well I saw them with my own eyes spreading those lies
and well I don’t wanna live a lie, too many sleepless nights
not mentioning the fights, I’m sorry to say lady

I’m walking away from the troubles in my life
I’m walking away oh to find a better day
I’m walking away from the troubles in my life
I’m walking away oh to find a better day
I’m walking away

Well I’m so tired baby
things you say you’re driving me away
whispers in the powder room baby
don’t listen to the games they play
girl I thought you’d realise
I’m not like them other guys
coz I saw them with my own eyes
you should’ve been more wise
and well I don’t wanna live a lie, too many sleepless nights
not mentioning the fights, I’m sorry to say lady

I’m walking away from the troubles in my life
I’m walking away oh to find a better day
I’m walking away from the troubles in my life
I’m walking away oh to find a better day
I’m walking away
