This project was thought up and created by ESP, the English For Special Purposes Foundation in Ulaanbaatar. ESP is a non-profit educational institution which is committed to helping the Mongolian community in the field of language training. ESPF provides courses in English for Special Purposes and English for General Purposes. VoiceBox is the newest in a number of projects ESP has initiated to help teach English in Mongolia. Other projects include an internet based distance education project and a project using SMS technology to help teach English.

The idea was to make a TV show and website to teach English to the youth of Mongolia and talk about issues relevant to them in a fun and interactive way. VoiceBox would not have been possible without the efforts of Catherine Gearing, who spent a year setting up the project as an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development (AYAD). There are currently two AYADs working on the project; David Lipson, in charge of the show and one of the hosts, and Sebastian Fowler, in charge of the website. They are both here for one year and will work hard to keep this project going into the future.
